It is the first branch of engineering dealing with habitat for human and animals. When technology progresses its interest extends to infrastructure for human activities.

Invention of cement was done by a Mason, reaction which is unknown even now. If Vastu is not properly handled it will not set. This may cause threat to future of the inhabitants.

Advancements in engineering lead to its branching in to specializations: mechanical, electrical etc.

Uses  of new materials help the civil engineer to new heights. The cave men becomes flat men.

Today civil engineer should study from out side. Do not be class room students. Study from the nature and what he sees is all about civil engineering.

He may study cantilever theory in text book and lab but he will  learn only by seeing cantilever actually and gain more experience in real life practical scenarios. I had used wooden cantilever beam for small sit out roof for our temporary shed, but my brother could not find its action. It happened while I was doing my BSc in physics.

Materials acts a main part in engineering. It should have good fire rating. It should be cheap or available in plenty. There had an era for plastic: but what is its present situation? Durability what is its part.

When first stone arch was built it was a fear for the common man, would it collapse..?

Today also many structures cause tension due to excessive deflection or inadequate section.

Civil engineering drawing is the language of a civil engineer. Now advancements of computer helps very much in this area: say hologram.

Mechanical engineering pushed the civil engineer a lot in speed and safety

Electrical engineer plays his role .

Thus an engineer makes not only a home, but also a place to live or let live.
